URS developed a simple system to assign a “preservation weight” to each potential preserve area. Various factors were identified and a ranking system was developed allowing us to rank the factors on scales of 1 to 4 or 1 to 5. Factor 1: Size Class The first factor assessed was size. A size class scale was developed to rank areas: 1 to 24.9 acres = 1 25 to 49.9 acres = 2 50 to 99.9 acres = 3 100 or more acres = 4 Factor 2: Connectivity Connectivity was assessed. Connectivity is the degree to which a path is connected to other patches of similar composition. A forest patch that is surrounded by other forest patches has very high connectivity. Conversely a wetland surrounded by farm field has no connectivity. Connectivity was assessed by treating each patches as a square, and assessing the number of sides that touched a similar community. Thus a patch of forest that touched another forest on two sides, and farm fields on the other two sides, had a connectivity score of 2. Factor 3: Edge to Interior Ratio Edge to interior ratio was calculated. The resulting ratios were then ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 such that: Ratios < 1 = 5 Ratios > 1, < 2 = 4 Ratios > 2, < 3 = 3 Ratios >3, < 4 = 2 Ratios > 4 = 1 Factor 4: Edge Shape The shape of an area was considered. One way to express the complexity of a perimeter is to measure how far that shape deviates from a circle of the same area. The formula for this comparison is: Where: R = a dimensionless quantity representing the deviation of the shape from round. p = the perimeter length A = the area of the shape. R will vary from 1 in a circular shape, to infinity for a very long and narrow shape (approaching a line). Output from this formula was ranked on a scale of 1 to 5: R < 2 = 5 R > 2, < 3 = 4 R > 3, < 4 = 3 R > 4, < 5 = 2 R > 5 = 1 Factor 5: Stream Buffer Finally, each potential preserve area was given an extra point if it might function as a stream buffer. This was assessed by creating a computer command that identified all those potential preserve polygons that touched a stream edge. If the polygon was adjacent to a stream, it received a score of 1 for this factor. If the polygon was not adjacent to a stream, the score was 0. A final preservation priority score was developed by summing the 5 preservation factors. Finally, these factors are displayed individually with each polygon. This enables future users to comment and compare their preservation/restoration value and to change values based upon new factors. Also, to help deciver these areas on a map, a ranking system was created with low, medium & high quality of opportunity. The ranking is as follows: Low = below 7 Medium = 7.01-12 High = above 12 Purpose: Supplemental_Information: Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 3/1/2004 Ending_Date: 5/31/2005 Currentness_Reference: Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: As needed Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -150.9983 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -14.0017 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 90.0100 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 89.9900 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Access_Constraints: Use_Constraints: Point_of_Contact: Contact_Information: Contact_Organization_Primary: Contact_Organization: North Coast Regional Council of Park Districts (NCRCPD) Contact_Person: Richard Heaton Contact_Position: Project Manager Contact_Address: Address_Type: mailing and physical address Address: 6364 Deerview Ln City: Medina State_or_Province: Ohio Postal_Code: 44256 Country: USA Contact_Voice_Telephone: 330-722-9374 Contact_Facsimile_Telephone: 330-722-9366 Contact_Electronic_Mail_Address: RHeaton@medinaco.org Hours_of_Service: 8-4:30 eastern standard Native_Data_Set_Environment: ArcView version 3.2 shapefile format Top

The North Coast Regional Council of Park Districts (NCRCPD) received a Great Lakes Coastal Restoration Grant in 2003 that would provide funding to promote regional planning and management in the multiple counties of the North Central Ohio Lake Erie Watershed (Lorain, Erie, Medina, Huron, Ashland, Seneca, Ottawa, Wood, & Sandusky counties). The grant project, which is just Phase 1, includes: " A regional clearinghouse of natural resource information " A landuse classification system for detailed analysis " Scientific quantifiable methodology to pinpoint critical tracts of land required for preserving & restoring water quality in Lake Erie " an interactive, public internet mapping web site that would enable other agencies to produce custom mapping for future funding " provide a regional planning tool to reduce duplicity " create a platform for future data management and review by the public & other agencies This documentation is the final product of that Phase 1 project. Additional funding is being sought to include more information.
